Do I need to follow any sequence during creating of WBS?

I have been asked to produce WBS for project, on which I am participating. Should I start with most convenient work (and then continue with other activities), or do I need to follow some sequence?

  1. Dear Barbora, are you leading or just participating on project? In general, for the WBS creation is PM accountable with his core team. Of course this activity can be delegated to others than PM, but rather not. According to PMI, there are 2 general ways of WBS creation (process and deliverable oriented).   2. Firstly, at the top of WBS, you should create square abreast for main project phases (usually divided by milestones). Then you should go to details for every one of mentioned phase by specifying activities in required sequence in downward direction. It does not matter where you start. You can start with defintion of activities you like the most and then continue with rest of work. Important is to have listed all activities performed during project. You need to realize those are baseline data for creating of activity list in Gannt Chart.

Work breakdown structure is a tool for multilevel text-based, grafical and numerical presentation of the partial and final products, outputs, contracts and works, needed for the project objectives. The top level of the work breakdown structure is usually the project scope or project product. The second level are the cpntracts (deliveries), project phases, project stages, divided onto works. The basic level constitute the work packages and planning work pckages. The work breakdown structure is a basis for thestatement of works. It is possible to combine the work breakdown structure with other types of breakdown structures. Most common is the combination with the product breakdown structure. The work breakdown structure must be updated when the project changes. There exist several methods how to create the work breakdown structure. Frequently used methods are the logical frame method and the de-composition method.
