Project management crashing technique

Project team was discussing our options to fix delay of construction project. One of proposals was to crash certain activities. Project manager looked into documentation and said it would work only in case if we have mentioned activities on critical path. Can you please explain what he was meaning?

  1. Most important is to understand definition of critical path. The sum of time of all activities on critical path is equal of minimal time to finish entire project. If you shorten some activity which is on critical path, you can shorten entire project. And this is his goal. It depends on type of activities what schedule compression method he is going to use (fast tracking or crashing).
