How to motivate people?

Hello colleagues, I would like to ask question or rather open discussion on topic, which I suppose happens in a life of the PM. How to motivate people, who are not dedicated/assigned to your project? Those people are supporting your project as part of their daily job together with other tasks. So what is the best way to motivate people, when you have BAU (business as usual) "project". Thank you for any comment.

  1. Hi Milan, I have shared information about motivation earlier so here is the summary: Motivation leads to success or failure. It really depends on motivator what will be the outcome. Points to remember to make it a success: 1. Motivation is a journey not a destination. 2. Motivation is a continuous process including hard work. 3. Do not let motivation fade away if you do not see success immediately. Learning process takes time. 4. Motivation equals acceptance. 5. Engage all even those who are reluctant to participate. – to see their impact in project. Point them to project objectives to see the better picture as they might not be involved much involved so do not see the need to participate. It is like eating a piece of cake with not much flavor alone. Even if they participate only partilally they are still part of project team and should be treated so.

  2. Hi Milan, this is actually very common question in general and there is no universal answer. Though, I think that the best way how to motivate people is to help them find their own inner motivation. One´s motivatoin can be working with other people, other´s the challenging environment, another´s even afternoons cup of coffee.. but once you have this kind of information, you can build on it and set the cooperation with them in a way that would match with their motivation needs. And one exclamation mark (!!) - Money is not a motivator, it is rather short-term stimulator that works only termporary. From long-term perspective the motivators are different.
