   Each project team member is bringing some value to the whole effort, however small or insignificant it may seem to me, we never know the real investment (mental, emotional) and the amount of work that specific person had to do to be able to bring something to the whole. One thing is certain though, the next time it can be more, if we are able to say: Thank you – appreciating their effort specifically, publicly or in person. In addition, to give value to each team member they need to feel appreciated by communicating to them, how their input made possible for some benefits or improvements to come about on a higher level. We all need to see that our effort brings results for the whole. This of course requires me to behave based on other values such as service, respect, respecting differences, patience and so on. Giving appreciation is the lubricant that makes things move smoother. As Tony Robins said: Any idiot can point out the problem, a leader can do something about it. Leaders solve problems. Appreciating the value of each person is a good start, until you see it as a constant inevitability.

   Besides the value of a team member in the project (I fully agree with Ladislav's comment on that) there is also good to know and appreciate the values important for individual team members. E.g. if some teammembers value calm and silent work environment then PM should avoid (if possible) having them in noisy environment (e.g. a room next to main city street or next to a room which is being reconstructed). PM can even consider moving all these team members into the quietest room available to the project. Knowing values of team members is also very useful when choosing motivation strategies (one team member could prefer money, while the other one being publicly praised instead).

   Hello, Great question! I completely agree with above mentioned. One of the tools how to work with appretiation value of a team member are 1on1 meetings - during which a manager has enough space to ask questions like: What motivates you at work? What makes you happy about your job? What are you good at? What has been your greatest achievement lately? What are you proud of? Is there anything you can teach someone else? - questions leading to gathering information about motivators and appreciation needs of the team member. And they are also a proof of manager showing interest in their team members.
