When to record Lessons Learned

Success Problem

The final meeting after the project delivery to summarize the lessons learned is good but has potential not to catch all lessons during the whole project.

Impact

Some of important Lessons learned especially at the beginning of the project may disappear.

Recommendation

1. Don’t save all lessons learned for the end of the project. Attach quick review meetings to project stage/milestones to support continuous learning. 2. Focus on WHY and HOW. What problems did the project encounter and How were those challenges solved? 3. Define it as What worked well? and What can we do better? 4. Make takeaways actionable and widely applicable, i.e. once the lessons learned have been collected repackage them for general use and apply them to your future work. 5. Make your conclusions accessible. Share the experience and the ideas with the wider team to improve as a team.

  1. Dear Juraj, fully agree with you. Lessons learned (LL) activity is one of 2 most important topics with regards to project management while leading a project. The other one is superb risk management. Proper LL documentation and regular sessions within my project team helped us to improve the implementation of the same cloud platform in half of time in 2 different locations. I would not believe if I was not experiencing that. :) LL is strong power in hands of PM and whole organization if correctly and effectively used. In addition to your recommendations I'd say, apart of continuous LL sessions during the project it's really important to have one big LL workshop (1-2 days) at the end of the project with core team, vendors and mgmt - steering committee team. Maybe one would say it's long time, but those fruitful discussions and outcomes are worth it. Take care Viktor
