KANBAN and long -term development projects

   Hello Jozef, basically you’re right. When you think of the Kanban you think of a long-term continual delivery which proves to be extremely efficient in a long run but it’s not a place to go to if you’re in the middle of a single running project which has escalations and needs to be finished early. In situation like this, I’d recommend: 1) Quickly assessing the remaining critical path of your project 2) Implementing a simple “to do-doing-done” task board to track the progress of the activities (mainly) on the critical path (this is actually an element of the Kanban which has to do with visualization and transparency of the workflow and often works better than a regular action item list) 3) Using a daily standups to increase dynamics, transparency and flexibility of your delivery (this comes from Scum). This way you can use the best of 2 worlds – waterfall and agile – to finish your project. However, the Kanban topic is a bit more complex. In its original meaning as a framework, the Kanban is not a project management method. It’s a framework for continual process improvement and is used especially for a standardized sequence of activities. Almost like operations. Very often, however, when people say “Kanban”, they mean “Scrumban”. Scrumban is an agile PM approach which adopts different elements from Scrum and Kanban and merges them together. There’s a great room for custom tailoring. In Scrumban you don’t do heavy upfront planning neither you work in time-boxed sprints. Instead you keep delivering deliverables to the customer continually according to their priority and value. Normally you limit the work in progress (just like in Kanban) to keep the focus and limit the chaos. Just like in Scrum, however, you’re able to forecast your expected delivery by measuring your average velocity/ throughput in delivery and assessing the complexity of items in your backlog. Then, comparing one with the other is a simple math... If you have more questions or would like to clarify anything, let me know ;)
