VALUE OF KNOWLEDGE-BASED VERSUS PERFORMANCE-BASED CERTIFICATION

Success Problem

What is the difference between the IPMA and PRINCE certification approaches?

Impact

The knowledge based certfication (Like PRINCE certification) measures the knowledge against a knowledge-based standard. The performance-based certification (like IPMA certification) is an evaluation of how effectively the competency is actually applied in the workplace.

Recommendation

Knowledge is defined in a body of knowledge and the standard is applied using a test. Performance is a broader standard that encompasses knowledge of the subject, skills (the ability to apply knowledge), and attitude. The main bonus of the certification according IPMA ICB-4 is besides their independency from educational organizations also the independency from single project management methodologies and the verification not only of the knowledge but also experience and especially the personal attitudes to the professional project management.
