Multitasking

Success Problem

The project manager asks the team member to realize more activities in paralel.

Impact

This mutlitasking may better exploite capacity of the team members, but the disadvantage can be the overloading them.

Recommendation

Multitasking means to start the new activity before the foregoing activity was finished and delivered. Using multitasking are often not considered the wastes through the repeating the past work. There are cost losses from the thinking reorientation, sometimes also losses from the changes of tools and environment.

According to my experience on IT Development projects, in case that IT Senior Analyst / Senior IT Developer is working on 2-3 Key projects, this is still manageable and without extra costs due to the thinking reorientation. This setup is also limiting his idle time when he is waiting for other inputs. To ask IT Guru for work at 4 or more key projects in parallel, it may generate additional costs as Igor mentioned above
